https://x.com/AjayshreeSamby3/status/19 ... 5980089478 ---> #GoodNews. Larsen and Toubro (L&T) and Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau are at an advanced stage of completing design of 2,500 tons conventional diesel electric submarines to be completed under one year. L&T was selected as a joint design partner after a competition.

Patil, Director and SEVP of L&T Defence, revealed an accelerated conventional submarine design program — informally named 'Project-76' — being pursued in partnership with the Warship Design Bureau. Its design is on advance stages and will reach finalization in just one year.

Very good steps. They delivered on their commitments unlike PSU fellows
Re: Project 76 SSK: News & Discussion: 20 July 2025
What gives ? No foreign collaboration ? How did L&T acquire the required expertise ?!!

Re: Project 76 SSK: News & Discussion: 20 July 2025
I hope it materializes then we might have 3 shipyard for submarine building.
HSL & MDL to build SSN/SSGN/SSBN
L&T to build SSK.
This will help to build up the sizeable sub surface capability in a relatively quick time.

MDL is also building the three follow on Scorpenes + the six Project 75I vessels.
Hoping that the six build Project 76 SSK program transitions to *AT MINIMUM* a 12 build program.

Re: Project 76 SSK: News & Discussion: 20 July 2025
knowing INs propensity for 3s and 6s , it could be a variant or a different class after 6 !
Re: Project 76 SSK: News & Discussion: 20 July 2025
Indeed. So true. Well said.
Re: Project 76 SSK: News & Discussion: 20 July 2025
When we can have our own P-76 SSK, then there should not be any P-75I. All the stakeholders should focus on this P-76 program and production run of 12-18 submarines in 3 or 4 tranches.
If there is any thoughts of stopgap, then it should be SSN and here MDL production line could be used after the 3 Scorpenes.

Re: Project 76 SSK: News & Discussion: 20 July 2025
In the Video its said to be a 1500 ton Submarine and not the 3000 ton reported earlier. Assuming it to be Scorpene design+ATV Systems to keep it indigenous. Add to that DRDO AIP. If this is true, then the project will fructify much more faster.

Like the Arihant model, let the 1st SSK rollout quickly even if its limited in many ways. While its stretching its sea legs, the learnings can be incorporated in the 2nd and following subs, which can all launch in quick succession
Our SSBN model has worked well and it should be the approach going forward, be it SSK or SSN

Rakesh
What timeline are we looking for SSK 76??
We still have the issue of Engine and any mid-plan changes and the addition of the 'Unobtanium'

Design has to be validated and contract has to be signed. Heaven only knows when that will happen, but I really hope it does not end up like the fiasco that is P-75I program. All other factors being equal, keel laying will occur only in the 2030s and then you have construction. The first boat will arrive in the late 2030s, which is a best case scenario.
Engine will be MTU of Germany, just like in the Scorpene (Kalvari Class) and in the P-75I program. We don't make our own engines for submarines, another lacuna in our defence planning.
Lets not hope for unobtanium, which will only delay the program.
Re: Project 76 SSK: News & Discussion: 20 July 2025
Did you mean 2,500 ton above?
Tonnage will differ from design stage to when keel is finally laid.
Re: Project 76 SSK: News & Discussion: 20 July 2025
not sure if the indian new scorpene is a different class or variant of brazilian PROSUB ..
wiki says this " On the other hand, these submarines could be equipped with an Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system, which uses ethanol and oxygen to move a steam turbine, but Brazil chose not to make use of this feature and instead opted for increased space for fuel, food, and additional bunks.[9]
The concealment of diesel-electric propulsion submarines cannot be performed for a long time; periodically it will have to return to the surface, as it depends on atmospheric air to run the engine, recharge the batteries, as well as to refill the air from inside the station. Therefore, the parts are exposed and can be detected by radars, ships and aircraft. The submarines will have reduced mobility, with an average speed of 21 kn (39 km/h; 24 mph). The main use of these submarines is for patrolling the Brazilian coast, since their mobility and speed is reduced, making them unsuitable for the open sea for certain types of missions. With a displacement of two thousand tons, its length is 71.6 metres (234 ft 11 in), its beam measures 6.2 metres (20 ft 4 in), and its draft is up to 5.5 metres (18 ft 1 in). Diesel-electric propulsion will allow them to have an autonomy of up to 20,924 km (13,002 miles; 11,298 nmi) ]

https://x.com/shreedharsingh9/status/19 ... 0231580055 ---> The design of L&T's P-76 conventional submarine, based on an extended design of the SOV500 Class, is scheduled to be completed by 2026-27. The first submarine is expected to be delivered within a time frame of 10 years from the order.

https://x.com/AjayshreeSamby3/status/19 ... 8313975846 ---> L&T's P-76 conventional submarine will be an extended version of L&T SOV. Design to be completed within in 1.5 years after that orders to be placed costing a fraction of western analogues. Six P-76 submarines offered by L&T to be completed in 10 years after order being placed.

https://x.com/Aryan_warlord/status/1966384084600729618 ---> This is one of at least two competing designs for P76 with @MazagonDockLtd preparing their own design based on their experience building the MSX02A "Arowana" which they built & launched in 2024 as well, that said @larsentoubro have taken a logical & achievable step ahead by planning to expand the SOV400 into a full sized SSK. One must note that till date, the Indian Navy has still not ordered a single SOV400.
