Not so middle class. AOC grew up in Westchester, an expensive suburb north of NYC. Despite her flagrant economic privilege, she affected a thick Puerto Rican accent & flaunted her Hispanic heritage for DEI advantage at every turn with a skill & shamelessness that would embarrass even Tejashwi Yadav.
Went to Boston University (even DEI will only get a mediocre mind so far) but set herself up with USAID/NED funded projects that send students overseas to preach 3rd-wave feminism & LGBTQ gospel from the white-walled luxury enclaves of 3rd-world capitals... West Africa in her case, IIRC.
This is where AOC's skill for vapid & photogenic virtue-signaling caught the eye of DNC recruiters, kickstarting her political career. Besides Instagram posturing, she has a real knack for identifying the right coat-tails to provide upward mobility in that sick system, and unfailingly attaches herself to the wearer like a leech. She has hopped from Neera Tanden to Hillary Clinton to Bernie Sanders & Elizabeth Warren as the winds changed, all to her benefit.
I may not be a fan of her politics, but spreading mis-truths and inaccurate claims isn’t helpful. Just to clarify a few facts about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez:
She grew up in a working- to middle-class family in Westchester
County,
which has a wide range of neighborhoods—not all expensive or privileged. Her family background is far from elite.
She attended Boston University (
Boston University’s College of Arts and Sciences) and earned a degree in Economics and International Relations—
a solid academic record.
(During college at Boston University, AOC did participate in a semester abroad in Niger through the International Education Program offered by BU. This was part of her studies in International Relations.
The program involved study and observation, not “preaching” any ideology — let alone third-wave feminism or LGBTQ+ issues — as the quote suggests.
It was an academic program, not a government-funded political mission, and had nothing to do with USAID or NED.)
There’s no evidence she was involved in any USAID or NED overseas projects. Before politics, she worked locally as a bartender and community organizer.
Her Puerto Rican heritage and Bronx accent are genuine parts of her identity, not something “affected” for political advantage.
She rose to prominence largely due to grassroots organizing and defeating a longtime incumbent in a tough primary.
And yes, she even has an asteroid named after her—23238 Ocasio-Cortez—
discovered by MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory’s LINEAR program. This honor was given
because she placed second in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) for her research on antioxidants in roundworms. It’s a real, merit-based recognition tied to her scientific achievement in high school, definitely not a DEI or political appointment.
I get that we can disagree politically, but it’s important to stick to the facts. Misinformation doesn’t help anyone.
