Another 114 or 300 will get ordered instead of the 1000 needed.
Know everything about Mounted Gun System (MGS)
Did you know? The Mounted Gun System (MGS) is built to operate in both desert and high-altitude terrains, with shoot-and-scoot capability that allows it to deploy quickly and move out swiftly after firing alongside mechanised forces. The armament system strengthens operational effectiveness with rapid strike capability and delivers a clear tactical advantage through reliable, low-maintenance precision firepower.

LR-GR 120 for Pinaka launcher. 8x300 mm missiles. Equivalent to Israeli EXTRA missile.
The CEP is given as <30m. We know from Operation Sindoor, Indian SATNAV guidance is demonstrated CEP of <1.5 feet.
Combine with the 110 kg warhead
One salvo is 8x110 ~ 900kg payload.

While we have -Recent global clashes, most notably the ongoing war in Ukraine, have profoundly influenced the Army's strategic calculations. These conflicts have clearly illustrated that old-school "area saturation"—firing massive swarms of unguided rockets over a general area—is an obsolete tactic.

According to defence sources, the Indian Army aims to cultivate a strike profile reminiscent of the highly successful American HIMARS.

Russia’s jamming of US-provided rocket systems complicates Ukraine’s war effort
Russia has been thwarting US-made mobile rocket systems in Ukraine more frequently in recent months, using electronic jammers to throw off its GPS guided targeting system to cause rockets to miss their targets, multiple people briefed on the matter told CNN.
The medium-range rocket systems were hailed as a game changer in the conflict and have played a key role since the moment they arrived in Ukraine last summer, including in last year’s offensive that allowed Ukraine to take back significant swaths of territory from Russia.
But in recent months, the systems have been rendered increasingly less effective by the Russians’ intensive blocking, five US, British and Ukrainian sources tell CNN, forcing US and Ukrainian officials to find ways to tweak the HIMARS’ software to counter the evolving Russian jamming efforts.
“It is a constant cat-and-mouse game” of finding a countermeasure to the jamming, a Pentagon official said, only to then have the Russians counteract that countermeasure. And it is not clear how sustainable that game is in the long term.

It may be from the learnings of op. sindoor how automatic targeting system can enhance simple gun to act as counter-drone system. if all caliber and type of gun upgraded with this system it really can make huge impact in next round of Op. sindoor.

India just upgraded its Light Field Gun to aim itself automatically.
No manual dials, No human error Just a computer locking on faster than any crew ever could.
The auto laying upgrade has been successfully validated at Itarsi firing ranges by the Indian Army.
Here is what this means in actual combat:
• Gun positions itself automatically using electronic controls instead of manual alignment by crew
• Computer calculates the complete firing solution in seconds accounting for wind, temperature, barrel wear and ammunition type simultaneously
• Crew no longer needs to manually turn dials and calculate angles under enemy fire and time pressure
• Preparation time before firing cut dramatically giving the crew a critical survival advantage
• Gun can reposition, relocate and be ready to fire again far faster than any manually operated system
In modern counter battery warfare speed is the difference between firing first and being destroyed first.
Enemy radar detects your gun the moment it fires.
A counter strike arrives within minutes.
A crew that spends 3 minutes manually aiming does not get a second shot.
A gun that aims itself in seconds does.
This upgrade does not replace the gun. It replaces the slowest and most error prone part of operating it.

If approved, the contract is likely to be awarded to Larsen & Toubro (L&T), which manufactures the K9 Vajra-T in India under a technology partnership with South Korean defence major Hanwha Aerospace.
The proposed acquisition would significantly expand the Army’s artillery inventory, taking the total number of K9 Vajra guns ordered by India to more than 500.
Defence planners view the expansion as a critical step in strengthening long-range firepower across both the western front and the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, amid a rapidly evolving security environment.
The move comes as the Indian military continues to draw lessons from recent operational requirements, including the high-intensity precision strike capabilities demonstrated during Operation Sindoor.
Re: Artillery Corps: News & Discussion
Another failure of the Modi govt. When the First lot of Artillery was imported, a K9 alternative must have been made in India itself with DRDO. They have expertise in making the BHIM. Keep importing and keep screw in India alive. There are already lighter guns available within the nation and all the artillery needs can be met from within, if the MoD and DM or PM must have taken the initiative long back.
DRDO-DENEL BHIM 155MM X 52 CALIBER SPGH
The Bhim self-propelled howitzer was a type of self-propelled artillery developed by the South African company Denel under the supervision of the Indian Defence Research and Development Organisation. It was designed to meet the Indian Army's requirements for self-propelled artillery units, It was mated with Denel T6 turret & Arjun chassis, the footage of turret is actually from G6 which is similar to T6 hence included in video.

My uneducated guess is the usability of K9 might be better than what DRDO attempted, I think sometimes they miss out on design specs not tech.
But ofc we know there is more than meets the eye

A proposal to acquire more than 300 additional K9 Vajra self-propelled howitzers, worth around ₹23,000 crore, is set to be considered by the Defence Procurement Board.
If approved, the order will significantly boost India's long-range strike capabilities and further strengthen indigenous defence manufacturing.

The BHIM saga is a sordid one, like with everything in Indian Army Artillery. Something has been very rotten for very long in DG Artillery
The only good news is that, at least now, they are ordering K9 in significant numbers

Re: Artillery Corps: News & Discussion
Prem ji, at some point in time, we need our own tracked artillery systems. BHIM at that time, was a failure because of the Denel issue. Today there is great oppurtunity to have our own gun, not just for the Indian military but for the world as well. The kind of range that the indigenous system will give will be superior to the imported one. The only hindarance today is the engines. Once the DATRAN come online, things will be really easy. Project can start even now and when DATRAN tests are over, the gun will be ready.Prem Kumar wrote: ↑10 Jun 2026 23:13 The BHIM saga is a sordid one, like with everything in Indian Army Artillery. Since the K9 is going to be ordered, there is a time to develop a variant based on Arjun MKII with the DATRAN engine or the Ranjit version that's going to be much more lighter with the DRDO Kalyani gun barrel. A resurrection of the BHIM project is very much possible in today's context and i'm sure will be a grand success.
