As the Joker famously said "Do I look like the kind of guy who has a plan"? Does it look like that the PCB has a plan?

YOUR editorial ‘Indian aid offer’ (Aug 30) has rightly pointed out that the government and the ministry of foreign affairs are not beating at the same frequency. The much hyped Indo-Pak foreign ministers’ level talks made no headway as India remained determined to talk only on terrorism and Mumbai blasts. The recent devastating floods that drew attention the world over forced India to extend help to Pakistan for the relief of the affected people.
It announced $5 million aid on humanitarian grounds and it was accepted by the PM and the foreign minister. Pakistan, in principle, had accepted the offer but now wants that it should be routed through the United Nations. Whether it is routed through the UN or received directly makes no difference because it is Indian aid, either you accept it or politely say ‘no’ The afterthought of re-routing the aid through the United Nations may delay the arrival of the aid that is badly needed.
In fact, our direct acceptance could have helped in bridging the gap and overcome trust deficit between the two countries. What is the wisdom behind this move can only be answered by the government.

Note that the mention of their "taller than the tallest mountain......deepest sea" friend is missing. The latest figures of the US assistance for Pakistan’s flood relief operations reached $200 million, which is the highest amount donated by a single country. The aid given by the United States is reaching most of the flood-affected areas through the United Nations and other international organisations and has immensely reduced the burden on the government.
As part of the relief efforts a number of helicopters, medical teams and Marine Corps are also playing a superb role in helping people out of danger and treating them.
The significance of our country being the frontline ally in the war against terrorism is rightly realised by the United States and that’s why the relief efforts are at its peak with contributions in almost every sector. Apart from the US, the whole world community is pouring in aid for the flood-hit people; France has contributed a total of 7.54 million euros; Saudi Arabia has contributed more than $140 million and the World Bank recently pledged a total of $1bn.

Police, intelligence agencies and other law enforcement agencies have so far remained unsuccessful in finding any clue regarding the adductors of Amir Malik, the son in law of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) Chairman Gen Tariq Majeed, despite a lapse of seven days since his abduction.
The Interior Ministry has assigned a special task to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in this regard.
It has been reported from at least two Interior Ministry sources in Pakistan that the ministry is in a state of panic and, as one of the sources, who wanted to remain anonymous, confirmed to Daily Times, “We are currently in a state of panic. If the whole al Qaeda, Taliban, TTP, local jihadi organisations and floods were not enough, we are now under immense pressure to trace the links of the alleged bombers caught in Ontario, Canada.”
While the country’s media is busy commenting on the latest cricket betting scandal and floods, a whole new crisis, perhaps of the same intensity as the Faisal Shahzad one, is brewing within both the international community and Canada.
Daily Times, after intense investigations and a tip-off from a source, was able to talk to a leader of the TTP who’s been alleged by a certain Western diplomat of being the brains behind the would-be terrorist attacks in Canada. TTP spokesman Azam Tariq neither refused nor denied the statement, but instead opted to say, “We support anyone who would fight the infidels.”
The TTP also paid homage to Faisal Shahzad for his bold actions in the US and said he had rendered great sacrifices to uphold the sacred cause of Islam. America is not safe on its own land, Azam Tariq pointed out.
While intense investigations are underway both in Pakistan and Canada, intelligence officials in Pakistan are said to be focusing on a friend of Shahzad – Muhammad Rehan – who originally introduced Shahzad to the TTP. {A whole bunch of people in Pakistan is thriving on looking out for potential terrorists and connecting them with the tanzeems. Probably, they get paid handsomely. It has become a business, perhaps. There are two classes of such spotters. One, who hang around near mosques and catch hold of Kasabs and the like. The other is 'high class' who hook international terrorists and transport them to Waziristan.}

Nothing new Mr clegg We know Pakistan is a beggar by birth.
What's new ? Hasn't it been happening since 1950 ? If there is one country that has not endured pain to achieve freedom from colonialists or grow by itself, then that is Pakistan and Pakistan only.
R. Vaidya, as usual, another excellent article. The UN Resolution, Nehru's assurance etc. were all in a particular context whose validity has been overwhelmed beyond recognition by events engendered by Pakistan and its stooges in the Valley. Assimilation of the J&K under our administration and staking the claim for the portions occupied by Pakistan and China must be the next steps.R Vaidya wrote:As far as India is concerned, it should hold an all-India referendum about the timing to scrap Article 370. That is the only referendum we should think of.

Hope that MMS and the GOI put a cork in it as far as the donations are concerned lest we be accused of aiding a terrorist state.

"The stock of the government, which was not very high to begin with, has fallen pretty low. Fewer and fewer people are taking Zardari seriously,"
The Army's profile is going up," Amir continues. "Its PR is going up. When Kayani undertakes a visit, it's much better choreographed, and that creates an impression that the Army is really much more efficient, although we have no tabulated figures on the relief effort taken by the Army or the impact on the overall situation."
He doesn't think the Army would step in. "I think they are pretty happy and pretty comfortable seeing the civilian process bleed like this," he says.
And Kayani, regarded as a consummate professional, probably knows "what the limitations in any misadventure may be," and the international approbation Pakistan could face, particularly from Europe, if the democratically elected civilian government were thrown out.
Dus percenti can safely take some cuts from the aid till election time.As evidence he cites Pakistan's ever-growing defense budget and the widely held view that the nation's defense and foreign policy come under the purview of the Army. "When they can get the same results behind the scenes," he says, "why come on the scene?"

Rising prices may put pressure on Pakistan’s central bank to boost its benchmark interest rate, already one of the highest in the world. Higher borrowing costs may impede investments and undermine economic growth, which Gilani estimated at 2.5 percent in the current financial year, 2 percentage points less than the government’s target.
Pakistan will harvest 4.4 million metric tons of rice in the marketing year that starts Nov. 1, down 35 percent from the previous year, according to a report by a unit of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The Food and Agriculture Organization has called for funds to replace half a million tons of wheat seed stocks destroyed by the floods, with planting of the staple due to take place over the next three months.
Gilani today said the natural disaster has destroyed 4,000 kilometers of roads and 1,000 bridges, pushing up the cost of delivering goods and services. He estimated the inflation rate to climb to between 15 percent and 20 percent.
My heart goes out to the poor Shias. They have to put up with such monstrosities and barbarity of terrorists who enjoy the protection of the Terrorist Pakistani Army. May Allah be kind to them and crush this country of Pakistan.
The two blasts near Karbala Gamay Shah triggered a stampede among members of the Shia procession that injured several persons. Many members of the procession attacked policemen, saying they had failed to provide adequate protection to the gathering.
The procession was making its way from the old quarters of Lahore to Karbala Gamay Shah to mark Hazrat Ali's death anniversary when the first two blasts occurred. The third explosion went off as rescue workers were rushing the injured to hospital.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Wednesday designated Pakistan's largest Taliban umbrella group Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as an official "foreign terrorist organization."
Because U.S. law requires that an organization pose a direct threat to the United States in order to be listed, the TTP's claim of involvement in the Times Square bombing attempt was significant. Now, the U.S. government can prosecute anyone giving "material aid" to the TTP, and the government can freeze the group's assets in the United States.
