The move follows the ECI’s directive in June 2025 and a recent meeting of Chief Electoral Officers from all states and Union Territories to finalize the operational details. The Commission plans to rationalize polling stations and upload updated rolls on CEO websites to enhance transparency and accessibility. While the Election Commission maintains the revision is a constitutional mandate crucial for fair elections, opposition parties have criticized it as potentially disenfranchising sections of voters, underscoring the political sensitivity surrounding SIR’s pan-India implementation.
